LAMP HOLDER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters AND BRACKET.
Patent No. 273,857, dated. March 13, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KIRK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Lamp Holder and Bracket, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved lamp holder and bracket in which are combined a device for securing the same to a table, shelf, or to the wall, and extension jointed arms, with a clamping device that firmly secures the lamp in an upright position and enables me to change the position of the lamp at will, keeping itin an upright position and preventing; its being o erturned. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view. Fig. 2 is atop view. Fig. 3 is a detailed section of ball-and-socket joint. Fig. at is a detailed top view of the same; Figs. 5, 6, and 7, details of the adjustable-clamp.

A, Figs. 1 and 2, shows the edge of a table or shelf, onto which is secured the arm B by the screw a, forcing the collar 1) up against the table or shelf A. On the lower end or corner of the arm B, back of the screw 0, I arrange the pivot-poiutn, cast with thearm B, by which I can secure the arm B to a side wall by the socket 1, Figs. 1 and 2, that is secured to the wall by ordinary screws, said socket having a recess for the pivot This allows the arm B to swing to the right or left. To the opposite end of the arm B, I secmc the arm 0, by the bolt 0 and nut d, in such a manner thatit forms a hinge-joint. ()n the opposite end of the arm 0, I arrange for the ball-and-socket joint G. One side of the socket is cast with the arm 0. The other side is a separate piece, as shown by H, Fig. 4.. This cap or side is held in position by the rounded end 1), running back of the proparts throughjection b, and the bolt 9 and the nut g on the opposite end. In this socket is secured the ball cast with the arm D in one piece. I also connect with the arm D the hinged arm D, hinged at d. ,To control the arm D and D, I
arrange in their center the bolt 73 and nut h, while the springj, wound around the bolt 6 and abutting against the arms D I), forcesthearms apart. At the outer end of these arms D and D is cast the segment-shaped clamp F and F. Back of these clamps F and F the arms Paud D are curved outwardly, and a groove formed at right angles to the arm, in which I fit the concaved adjusting-clamps E and E. These clamps are slotted, as shown at Z, Figs. and 6, for the bolts K and K, by which they are held in connection with the arms D and D and allow of an up-and-dowu adjustment. The con cave faces of the clamp E and the inner faces of the clamps F and F are faced with rubber m m and n n.
In using my invention the holder is secured to the edge of a-table or shelt' by the screw a, the arm B resting on the top of the table and pointingin any direction desired. I then socure the lamp between the concave clampsE E (if the lamp used hasa standard or colnm n that connects it with its base) and close the clamps firmly with the bolt t' and nut h, allowingthe base of the lamp to rest on the table. I then fasten the ball-and-socket joint G, so that it will hold the clamp in an upright position no matter in what direction I may swing the lamp. This socket-jointG, with the ad usting-clamps E and E, enables me to clasp the standard of the lamp at the best place. It the lamp is small, and has the handle on its-side. I clasp it by the clamps F and F, and if I wish to use the lamp from the side wall I release the holder from the table and set the pivot-point into the socket 1. The lamp, in either position, is held securely against overturi'iing.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The arm B, hinged to arm (J, the ball-audsocketjointG. combined with the hinged clampiug-arms D and D, and the screw '5, nut 11,, and springj, substantially asdescri bed and shown.
2. The arm B, hinged arm 0, ball-and-socket joint G, with clamp H, hinged arms D D, adjusting-clamps E E, pivot-point a, socket l, screw a, when combined and arranged as specified and shown.
