FARMVILLE, PITT COUNTY - The veteran memorial sits in the shadow of the town hall in Farmville.

Veterans, Dr. Bert Warren and Frank Bradham said they were part of the group that helped to create the memorial. They said, it was something special to do.

"People showed up and wanted to be a part of it. It was the most passionate endeavor that I've ever been involved with," said Dr. Warren.

Bradham said, "we all that participated in this love our county very much and we appreciate the sacrifice all of our brothers and sisters in the services have done."

Another veteran, David Gay, told me the town needed something to honor all those who have served from the area.

"What people don't realize is this town gave it its all during World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam...and that created the little town we have today," said Gay.

The money and materials were all donated to help build it. There was so much money left over that a scholarship for veterans has been created at Pitt Community College.

It contains the names of a few hundred veterans from the area. Their names are engraved on granite blocks on the ground. It says their name and the veteran's time of service.

They are expanding the memorial with 68 new granite blocks with more veteran names. If you are interested in getting one for a veteran in that area, you are asked to contact the town hall. Each block costs $150.
