Brad Pitt has opened up about his mental health, revealing that he shares a similarity with his Babylon character in that they bother suffer with "congenital melancholy".

ICYMI, Brad stars as silent movie star Jack Conrad in Hollywood's latest blockbuster. The film, which is set in the 1920s, aims to highlight the exploitative history of cinema and has an A-list cast including Margot Robbie.

Speaking about the connection he feels with his character, Brad this week told W Magazine that he relates to being in a state of "world-weariness".

"Sadly enough, that melancholy may be my natural mode of being, some congenital melancholy," he admitted. "But no, I think there’s a weariness that takes over with the character as he moves on. There’s a world-weariness that I can certainly relate to a little bit."

Brad continued: "At this time, more of us are trying to tear each other down than help each other up. I get a little weary."

Although it's not quite clear what Brad is getting at in terms of his experience with "congenital melancholy", the phrase – when broken down – means:

  • Congenital: having a particular trait from birth or by firmly established habit
  • Melancholy: a feeling of pensive sadness, typically with no obvious cause
