Excellent RRS Quality as usual!

September 29, 2024This is my 4th RRS L-bracket for the Sony A7 series. Previous brackets were for the original A7, A7III and A7RIIIa.
This one differs from the A7III and A7rIIIa in that you don't have to remove the battery door and mount in on the bracket. However to accomplish this the opening to allow the door to open fully has been made square shaped. I believe this is the reason for the lip at the bottom of the grip. For me, that doesn't bother me at all as there is plenty of room for my pinky finger -- but I have small hands and the grip for the A7rV has a different shape that kind of places your hand higher up on the grip when your finger is on the shutter button. Quite different from the A7III series. Without the L-bracket, my pinky still has room on the grip which was not true of the 7III series where the pinky would fall under the camera, but with the L-bracket it didn't.
Quality is top notch wich you can expect from RRS. Nice that the bracket will slide away from the camera for accessing the side doors, if you use a shutter release, microphone or other accessories. I also own RRS L-brackets for my old Minolta Maxxum 9, 7D and Sony A99. Highly recommended if you do any tripod work, especially in vertical orientation or as a grip extender. A bonus is that it is extra protection for the bottom and side of your camera. Designed and built in the USA (Utah) with good customer service which is a personal preference for me.
[Rewarded Review] lovely fit!

December 8, 2024Looked at all suitable L brackets that would fit my Sony a7rv, Wanted something that did not interfere with the articulating screen and allowed easy battery change. This set worked great. Love the hidden wrench as well being available in the field for adjustments. Not the cheapest bracket but the Sony camera is not a budget camera either. Its a small price for a quality item designed for this camera. Happy with my purchase from B&H.
First time a RRS product has disappointed me

December 10, 2018Ive been a fan of RRS products for years. I use their ball heads, and their tripod brackets are on all my cameras and telephoto lenses. I like to keep L-plates permanently mounted on my cameras so I can quickly switch from landscape to portrait mode.
This RRS L-plate for the Sony A7R III does not work well for my needs. In particular, the L-component does not provide sufficient clearance to access the Micro-USB port on the camera. First, with the L-component mounted, its very difficult to open the rubber cover on the camera to access the Micro-USB and USB-C ports. Second, once opened, theres no convenient place for the rubber cover to stow, so it just sort of sticks out, waiting to be accidentally torn off. Third, once you do have the rubber cover open, there is not enough clearance to plug in the (as I write this) AFAIK only available wired remote / intervalometer that works on the A7R III. Ive occasionally gotten the cable wedged in there and working, but its hit or miss whether it works, and I can see now that Ive actually bent the Micro-USB plug on my wired remote. I hope I havent damaged the port on the camera. Not good, RRS, not good.
Perhaps a wired remote with a low profile plug might fit, but such a product doesnt currently exist AFAIK.
Of course, the only time I ever need to use that port is when mounted on a tripod. The only way to effectively use it is to remove the L-component, which requires using a tool to remove a nut that you could easily drop in the grass in the dark. Cant be done wearing gloves. Too risky to do in the dark. And of course, this means timelapses or other wired remote shots in portrait mode are out of the question.
And if youre ever out in the field and you need to remove the L-component in order to use the wired remote but dont have the hex tool with you, too bad. Yes, theres a slot in the base to hold the tool, but it doesnt feel like it holds it very well, so Im afraid to stow the tool there for fear of losing it.
So the idea of keeping an L-bracket permanently mounted on the camera for convenience is a pipe dream for this particular camera and RRS product.
Other negative reviews seem fixated on the battery door. Actually, I think the battery door is reasonably effective. Not perfect, as it takes a few tries to align the battery properly to push it into the camera, but Ive always been able to make it work, unlike the Micro-USB port.
Overall, this is my first disappointment with a RRS product.
Battery door can't open

May 5, 2024Just like other reviewers, I have the same problem with the battery door. The rubber casket broke and causes the bracket to become out of alignment with the battery door. This is the first problem I've had with RRS product. Considering how expensive this bracket is this shouldn't have happened.
