[Rewarded Review] Good design; build quality suspect
Jeffrey· Review provided by bhphotovideo.com · December 31, 2023
After a week of light use on a new A7RV I'm still acquainting myself with, I noticed the little spring piece that has to be opened for the battery compartment to open is missing. It appears the tiny screw that holds it in place may have just fallen out, and I can't find the piece as it may have just fallen off while walking with the camera. I've only opened the battery door a couple times so far, so it didn't get much use.

The rest of the bracket seems fine to me. The push buttons to release the L seem snappy enough and so far it works fine, but next time, I'll get the RRS bracket for this body as I've had several of those and they've never let me down. I have a Smallrig model for an OM-1 body and it's a traditional type and not technically an L Bracket, but can work with a plate attached. I was really wanting to love this design. I'll give it three stars as it's a promising design and others I've shown it to find it appealing. Just a little unsure with this small piece falling off so quickly.
[Rewarded Review] Genius Design

The folding design was a stroke of genius. This is the first L-bracket that I have had that had such easy access to the side ports and the battery. The side arm swings 270 degrees, so for horizontal shooting, it rests under the base plate. And with a push of a button, it releases so you can unfold it for vertical shooting. Also, I love the battery access design. At first I didn't even see that it opened wider to allow me to change batteries. Everything fits perfectly and I couldn't be happier with any other L-bracket in the world.

I used a previous SmallRig L-brackets on a Sony A7r iii. I liked it very much. My recent purchase is presently on my A7r v and, so far, I love the improvements. In particular, the side folds down, allowing unobstructed access, and a flat-head screw head replaces an Allen socket. A little flat piece for tightening the screw head stores nicely; but, if lost, a flat-head screwdriver is easier to find than a specific size of Allen wrench.
Easy switch between Portrait/Landscape orientation

Easy switch between Portrait/Landscape orientation. Rig is STABLE when folded, so there is no movement of the camera on the tripod. Designer has also thought about the battery removal (easy) and the use of extra cables (also easy) (will slide out wider if required even in portrait mode). Much better than the type of L-Bracket I have used before which never stayed on the camera for long. This has!
